The Story So Far

Name: Joseph Tan

Borned: April 4th 1986

Style: Sick/Dark Exposure

I have always had the interest to

pick up a camera and make photographs.

But i never had the chance to possess a digital camera of my own.

It was either my Mother's or my Sister's.

Late Teen - Early 20s:

I've spent most of my time on the guitars, keyboards and skateboards.

But i had always looked forward to posing for my friend, Fu YouQuan as he took pictures of me. - www.flickr.com/photos/thenextday

24th July 2011: I bought my first NIkon Camera - P500 when i was 25 years old.

I knew that i have lost out in a tremendous amount of time compared with other fortunate photographers who had their first camera as a teen.

So i went on a 90 day quest, to capture photographs every single day without fail, even if it just 1 or 2 photos.

During the 90 day period, another friend of mine , Kelvin Bai, kick start my knowledge by giving me orientation to the digital camera with capabilities of manual settings.

And i continued to venture into the world of photography on my own.

My friends asked me, why did I get a point and shoot digital camera rather than a Digital SLR.

And my response was: I am not working as a photographer, I do not need one.

But soon, i realised that, my pictures deserve a sensor which will provide better image quality.

10th Sept 2011: I bought my first Nikon DSLR - D5100

I fell in love with the DSLR the moment i layed my hands on it.

Just 17 days after I bought the P500.

I could finally shoot in full manual and manual focus with ease and accuracy.

And so, my journey beings after the 90th day of intense photo taking.

1st Aug 2012: I bought a Nikon D3200 and immediately sent it for IR conversion.

It opened up a whole new dimension of photography for me.

I used to despice the act of over editing photographs, as i find that most photographers are trying to save their poorly taken photographs.

As I edit more of my photographs, i realised that manupilative editing is sometimes required to create that mood/atmosphere that you want to protray.

I have developed my own techniques in manupilating the dull looking Infrared DIgital pictures and turn them into works of Art.

5th July 2013: I bought my first NIkon Full Frame DSLR - D600

After considering for 9 months and Constantly watching Florian and Salomon Schulz's Video - Chasing The Light , I have finally decided to buy this camera.

Partly, to replaced my damaged D5100 which I fell into the Sea Water of Thailand with it.

This is a perfect all round camera.

For photographs and videos, provided you have the agility to manual focus in manual situations, even at framing photographs.

Mid July 2013: I then discussed with my friend,

James. - jamesgraphy.wix.com/james

That we should develop our knowledge in portrait photography as well as applying the principles and techniques of strobing.

Early August 2013: I bought a set of Kenko Extension tubes, a field guide on flash photography by Adam Duckworth. Decided that it was time to go out there and acquire more sick pictures.

14th August 2013: I told myself, Strobing is the way to go!

28th August 2013: Collected my D600 from Nikon, they have replaced the faulty shutter. I really hope that the camera does not give me any more problems in the mean time.

11th September 2013: After the night shoot at 6/9/13, i dreamt that there is a scratch mark on my favourite 24-85mm Lens. I woke up telling myself that it was just a nightmare. To my horror, i checked my lens today. I saw a crack on my

front element. I believed that it was caused by impact against the lens when i was walking home that night. Nevertheless, it is still capable of producing a workable image.  The thing is, I only used this lens for 2 months and I am sure the crack will spread in time to come.

This picture was taken with the

                                   24-85mm 3.5-4.5G ED VR

                                   6th Sept 2013

after a crack to the front element

                                   11th Sept 2013

5th Oct 2013:  As much as I love making photos, I still love to shoot some good videos. Hopefully one day I can make great videos as well.

12th Oct 2013: My first time shooting for Malay Wedding.

Best part of the experience was, i get to shoot on 2 cameras.

A Nikon D600, and a Canon 5DMkII.

Both in Manual Mode.

Awesome display of Mastery.

19th Oct 2013: Took my first Model for a day time shoot.

Something which i haven't tried since i entered into strobe photography.

It was also the first time for me to try out shooting  the Sigma 70-300 APO

with strobes.  It's really not that bad. The Small aperture of the lens,

made it more manageable for large depth of field portraits.

31st  Oct 2013: Very Devastated. My Harddisk drive was burnt due to a power surge. And all my data was unretrievable. All my 4 months of hard work of photography, gone. I am at a complete lost right now.

This site is the only source of my pictures left. I want to kill myself.

Nevermind, the only thing left to look forward to is to make new pictures!

26th Nov 2013: I was out there shooting for an Event. And there goes my favourite SB700. Depressed. Good thing i brought a spare!

21st Dec 2013: Now that i have finally bought my SB910, let the shooting begin!

31st May 2014:  M. Fadzli, a good friend picked up Photography and I have decided to help him speed up the process of learning. I can't wait for him to build up his skills. From the moment he saw the strobe, he fell in love with it. Welcome on board fellow strobist.

6th June 2014: I brought M. Fadzli out for the 2nd session. First session with Flash. This time, to show him the principles of strobe photography.

He's a Talented learner.

Here is his photo site: M. Fadzli

My Beautiful Wife

27th June 2014: From the above experience, It really pays off to have mastery of your skills. Reading the Camera and gear's manuals are as equally important as stepping out of the house with your camera. Most of the pictures above taken by M. Fadzli were shot with the Sony Kit Lens.
